Main causes:
Breast engorgement: When milk production increases rapidly; mild fever may occur. Breasts become swollen and tense. Lymphatic and vascular congestion develop.
Milk stasis: Milk is not adequately removed because of infrequent feeding, poor latch, blocked ducts or sudden weaning. Therefore, milk accumulation leads to inflammation.
Mastitis: If inflammation progresses then it might lead to high fever, red and painful area of the breast, chills and body aches.
Breast abscess: An untreated mastitis may develop into an abscess requiring drainage.
