Heartburn

Heartburn is often triggered by lifestyle factors or specific foods and beverages that can relax the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), the valve between the oesophagus and stomach. When the LES is weakened or opens inappropriately, stomach acid can rise into the oesophagus. Here are common causes of heartburn:

  • Dietary Triggers: Certain foods are known to trigger acid reflux and heartburn. These include spicy foods, fatty or fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, onions, garlic, and citrus fruits.
  • Overeating: Eating large portions can increase stomach pressure, leading to reflux and heartburn.
  • Lying Down After Meals: Lying down too soon after eating can make it easier for stomach acid to move into the oesophagus.
  • Obesity: Excess weight, especially around the abdomen, can put pressure on the stomach and increase the risk of reflux.
  • Smoking: Smoking relaxes the LES and also increases acid production, making heartburn more likely.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and pressure from the growing uterus can contribute to heartburn in pregnancy.
