Fever is one of the body’s natural defense mechanisms, often signaling an underlying health issue such as an infection or inflammation. While it may cause discomfort, fever is not an illness itself, but a symptom of the body fighting off an invader.
The average body temperature is around 98.6°F (37°C), but a fever is typically defined as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher.
Fever can be accompanied by other symptoms like chills, sweating, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. In most cases, a fever helps the body eliminate harmful pathogens by making the environment less favourable for their survival.
There are numerous reasons the body might develop a fever. Common causes include:
- Infections: Viral infections like the flu, common cold, or COVID-19. Bacterial infections such as strep throat, pneumonia, or urinary tract infections.
- Inflammatory Conditions: Diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can cause fever as part of the body’s immune response.
- Heat Exhaustion: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures or dehydration can trigger heat exhaustion, leading to fever.
- Vaccinations
- Teething: In young children, mild fevers can occur during teething, though this is usually short-lived.
- Medications
- Serious Illnesses

- Belladonna: Useful when the fever is high and accompanied by sudden onset, flushed face, throbbing headache, and sensitivity to light. The skin may feel hot and dry.
- Bryonia: Ideal for fevers with slow onset, where the person feels very irritable and wants to be left alone. They may also have intense thirst and a dry cough. Movement tends to worsen symptoms.

- Ferrum Phos: Often used in the early stages of a fever, especially if there’s no clear cause yet. It helps the body mount an immune response before the illness fully develops.
- Eupatorium Perfoliatum: Effective for fevers where the person feels extreme aching in the bones, as if they are broken. It’s commonly used for fever related to influenza or dengue.
- Rhus Tox: This remedy is useful for fever that worsens with rest and improves with motion. The person may experience aching muscles, chills, and a desire to stretch or move.
- Pulsatilla: A great remedy for fevers that change frequently in intensity, with alternating hot and cold sensations. The individual may feel weepy, emotional, and crave company.
